The pull of the dark moon had been weaker that day but still stronger than normal. Head resting on one arm folded behind his head, Brett laid beside a sleeping Fawna under a covering of deer hide and stared at the ceiling, watching (in his mind at least) the new moon set. She had kept him distracted through all of that day and the previous afternoon. If the dark moon had whispered any more, he hadn’t heard it.

Not that it mattered. It had tormented him with the same things for years. Kordelia’s betrayal. The fight with his brother, and his father’s subsequent attempt to shoot him. The women he’d bedded, and Caddoc’s disapproval. His friend’s death. God’s abandonment, and the fact he’d been rendered a monster by someone else’s hate-driven actions.

“Does the moon still speak to you?”

He rolled his head to look at the woman currently sharing his bed. “It’s quiet now. It won’t whisper darkness again until next month.” Thankfully.

“And the full moon? How does it make you feel?”

“Usually... energized. I feel stronger, powerful in a way I can’t describe.” He frowned. “But when it follows a new moon such as this one just passed, the full moon has a darkness of its own. Red instead of black.”

“I don’t understand. Red? Do you mean the blood moon?”

“No. It’s... a feeling instead of the way it looks.” Brett swiped a hand over his eyes and yawned. “It builds rage and need that are hard to control and deny.”

“Need for what?”

He met her gaze. “Sex.”

Her brows rose. In amusement rather than scandal, he’d guess from the sparkle in her eyes and the tightness in her mouth that suggested she was trying not to smile.

“When I get away from everyone, especially women, that part of it eases, but the rage remains until the moon passes.”

“How long does it last?”

“Nearly a week sometimes.” Wanting to face her, Brett rolled onto his side, carefully so he didn’t throw himself off the bed onto the floor or shove Fawna against the wall. He resettled with an arm curled under his head.

“Must you be the wolf all that time?”

“No. Only the night when the moon is at its fullest.”

“Then return here when your need comes. See if it helps.”

Brett scowled. “Are you sure that’s what you want?” He certainly had no objections to sex, whenever and wherever he could get it, but he wouldn’t be one of those men for whom it was an entirely selfish act. He’d heard, and overheard, too many such complaints from women over the years. Granted, most of them had been prostitutes who were paid for their services, so that might have something to do with it.

Fawna grinned. “If having you in my bed is always so satisfying, you’re welcome here anytime.” She rolled toward him and laid a hand gently against his cheek. “The dark moon has passed, but perhaps once more before you leave?”

As if he’d say no.
